Allan Holdsworth - None Too Soon (96)

DownloadGuitarist Allan Holdsworth is widely considered to be one of the finest instrumentalists in all of jazz fusion, yet has never truly received the recognition that he so rightfully deserves.
Born on August 6, 1946, in Bradford, Yorkshire, Holdsworth was originally taught music by his father, who was a pianist.
First a saxophone player, Holdsworth didn't pick up the guitar until he was 17 years old, but learned the instrument quickly.
After playing in local outfits (in addition to learning the violin), Holdsworth relocated to London, where he was taken under the wing of saxophonist Ray Warleigh.
By 1972, Holdsworth had joined progressive rockers Tempest, appearing on the group's self-titled debut a year later before joining Soft Machine in December 1973 — and radically changing the latter outfit's sound to guitar-based fusion in the process.

Em 1971, ingressou no Berklee College of Music em Boston, Massachusetts.
Em 1974 juntou-se à banda de Chick Corea, Return to Forever, com a qual tocou até à sua dissolução em 1976.
Meola dedicou-se à exploração de uma grande variedade de estilos, notando-se sobretudo os seus trabalhos de fusão influenciados pela música latina.
Por quatro vezes foi considerado o melhor guitarrista pela revista Guitar Player Magazine.

O Focus é uma banda de rock progressivo dos Países Baixos fundada em 1969 pelo organista e flautista Thijs van Leer.
Foi para muitos a melhor banda dos Países Baixos nos anos 70.
Mas as qualidades da banda foram muito mais significantes.
Suas extensas e quase exclusivas composições instrumentais e improvisações continham várias referências à música erudita.
Um exemplo é a referência a ópera de Monteverdi na canção Eruption, do álbum Moving Waves.
Outra demonstração está na referência à Johann Sebastian Bach em Carnival Fugue, do álbum Focus 3, ou ainda das referências ao Renascimento de Anonymus II, do mesmo álbum.
Ainda em 1977 a banda retornou com o vocalista P. J. Proby se integrando à banda, que nessa época contava com Thijs Van Leer, Bert Ruiter, o guitarrista Eef Albers, o também guitarrista Phillip Catherine e o baterista Steve Smith.

Eithne Ni Bhraonain, filha do casal Máire (o Baba) Duggan e Leo Brennan, é a quarta de nove filhos, cujo nome, dado pelo seu avô materno, é de origem Gaélico Irlandês podendo ser traduzido como "Eithne filha de Brennan".
Nascida e criada em Gweedore, Município Donegal, situado no norte-oeste de Irlanda, um local cuja língua oficial é o irlandês.
Filha de pais músicos, Enya sempre procurou inspiração para as suas músicas na sua terra natal, com notada influência principalmente da cultura celta.

Essentially French keyboardist Cyrille Verdeaux and an ever-changing list of collaborators, among them Christian Boule and Gilbert Artman, Clearlight was among the most well-known French symphonic progressive rock bands of the 1970s.
Their massive, occasionally psychedelic sound showed a different side to Verdeaux than his later, more new age records.
One of the first bands signed to the fledgling Virgin Records in the early 1970s, Clearlight has been compared to such progressive bands as Yes and Genesis as well as more experimental groups like Gong.
The first Clearlight album, 1973's Symphony, presents the band at the height of their grandeur, pursuing everything from modern experimentalism to more classically styled pieces.
For the project, Verdeaux took on several members of Gong as collaborators. It was later re-recorded with a great deal of new material in 1990 and released as Symphony II.
Forever Blowing Bubbles was released in 1975 and found Clearlight slightly toning down the symphonic excess of Symphony with the addition of some jazz influences.
1977's Les Contes du Singe Fou was a collaboration with British vocalist/lyricist Ian Bellamy and was among the group's more psychedelic works. Clearlight Visions (1978) incorporated sitars and tablas and pointed the way toward Verdeaux's Indian-influenced solo career.
In Your Hands, a remake of Les Contes du Singe Fou with vocalist/keyboardist Gunnar Amundson, was released in 1996.

Capsicum Red - Appunti Per Un'idea Fissa

Formed in Treviso, Italy, in 1970, Capsicum Red were destined to become one of the era's most adventurous (albeit shortlived) bands, although few people could have guessed that from listening to their earliest releases.
Signing to Bla Bla, the band issued their first single, the delightfully pop-flavored "Ocean"/"She's A Stranger", early the following year and promptly scored a hit - intriguingly, but certainly successfully, Bla Bla promoted Capsicum Red as a British import! "Tarzan"/"Shangri-La", the band's second single, was similarly styled (and similarly successful), and it was 1973 before Capsicum Red truly revealed their musical intentions, across an astonishing debut album.
Appunti per un'idea fissa was unrelentingly progressive, layered with classical overtones - among them a 15 minute interpretation of Beethoven's Pathetique piano sonata - but also punctuated by the band's own gripping songwriting. Unfortunately, the stylistic shift was too vast for the group's proven audience. Appunti per un'idea fissa sank like a stone and, by the end of the year, Capsicum Red had folded.
Canzian promptly formed a new band, Pooh, and launched an immediate (and lucrative) return to the pop-based glories of early Capsicum Red; bassist Paolo Steffan later resurfaced as one half of the country rock duo Genova & Steffan.

Camel é uma banda britânica de rock progressivo formada em 1971.
O grupo lançou seu primeiro álbum em 1973 pela MCA Records.
Desbandaram por um breve período em 1981 mas retornaram com mudanças na formação.
Em 2003 o Camel fez sua turnê de despedida.
Camel quer dizer camelo em inglês e como o período do auge da banda também coincidiu com o auge da propaganda de uma marca de cigarros que empregava a figura de um camelo fumando, os discos da banda foram boicotados pelos antitabagistas, o que precipitou sua decadência.

Blondie é um banda que ganhou sucesso no final dos anos 1970 e inicio dos anos 1980.
Foram pioneiros nos gêneros musicais new wave e punk rock.
Após se conhecerem na banda The Stilettos, Deborah Harry e Chris Stein formaram os Angel and the Snakes.
Estes integravam o baterista Clem Burke, Jimmy Destri no teclado e o baixista Gary Valentine, mudando depois o nome para Blondie, inspirado pelos comentários de caminhoneiros que frequentemente gritavam Hey Blondie! para Deborah ao passar na estrada.

No final do ano de 1973 com a dissolução definitiva do Free, Paul Rodgers, embora tivesse recebido um convite tentador para substituir Ian Gillan no Deep Purple, resolve montar uma nova banda, juntamente com outro membro do Free, o baterista Simon Kirke.
Convidam o guitarrista do Mott The Hoople, Mick Ralphs, que aceita de imediato, pois estava insatisfeito com a liderança de Ian Hunter imposta por David Bowie.
No baixo chamam Raymond "Boz" Burrel, ex-Centipede e ex-King Crimson.
