One of the top jazz-rock fusion ensembles ever, the Dixie Dregs combined virtuoso technique with eclecticism and a sense of humor and spirit too frequently lacking in similar projects.

Guitarist Steve Morse and bassist Andy West played together as high school students in Augusta, Georgia in a conventional rock band called Dixie Grit.

When Morse was expelled from school for refusing to cut his hair, he enrolled at the University of Miami School of Music, where he met violinist Allen Sloan, who had played with the Miami Philharmonic, and drummer Rod Morgenstein.

The three decided to form a band, and Morse convinced West to come to Miami and join. The Dixie Dregs completed their lineup with keyboardist Steve Davidowski.

Their first album, The Great Spectacular, was recorded for a class project in 1975 and later released by the band (it is long out of print).

Following graduation, the quintet began playing live around the South and got their break after opening for Sea Level on 1976, when a representative from Capricorn Records was impressed enough to sign them.

Mark Parrish, a former member of Dixie Grit, replaced Davidowski for their official debut, 1977's Free Fall.

Their follow-up, What If, proved to be one of their most artistically successful albums, and the Dregs played at the 1978 Montreux Jazz Festival with T Lavitz replacing Parrish.

Half of Night of the Living Dregs contains excerpts from that concert. The group shortened their name to the Dregs for 1981's Unsung Heroes, and added both vocalists and three-time national fiddling champ Mark O'Connor, whose old-timey playing style added another dimension to the group's sound, for Industry Standard.

The Dregs then disbanded; the highly respected Morse formed his own band and recorded several albums, later joining Kansas from 1986 to 1988, while Morgenstein hooked up with pop-metallists Winger.

When brothers Johnny and Donnie Van Zant get together, it's not just another record in the country-rock world, it's an event.

The instantly identifiable voices of 38 Special and Lynyrd Skynyrd are teaming up for the first time under their own surname (just Van Zant) — and the results are nothing short of a modern southern classic.

Leaning more on the country side of things than rock is a big risk, but one that pays off.

The themes of the 11-song showcase tread familiar waters: love, loss, heartache, family, being homesick, and partying — all make their grand appearances in here in one fashion or another.

But the real gem of Get Right with the Man is the sincerity with which these topics are treated.

Never have the brothers sounded so relaxed behind a microphone, and the results are a pure southern barnburner of a good time from start to finish.

This disc by two Southern rock legends who happen to be brothers, Johnny (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Donnie (.38 Special) VanZant, is pretty much exactly what you would expect it to be.

The album contains ten tracks of well-written and performed Southern rock.

Although there are no real surprises or chances taken, the CD should definitely please fans of the genre and bluesy rock in general.

The recruitment of Jim Vallance behind the drums and bass player Mike Porcaro didn't bring 38 Special the kind of help the band was looking for with 1986's Strength in Numbers.
Following a string of convincing albums (Wild-Eyed Southern Boys, Special Forces, Tour de Force) during the early '80s, the band decided to take a couple of years off before returning to the studio, but after doing so, it seemed that the bandmembers had left their knack for producing affable radio songs behind them.
The album sports a minor hit in "Like No Other Night," but it can't compare to previous efforts like "If I'd Been the One," "Back Where You Belong," or "Teacher Teacher," where Van Zant was vocally perfect and both guitarists complemented him to create some appealing rock radio hits.
Actually, there's no appealing guitar craft to be found on the album, and even though Van Zant sounds somewhat spirited on two or three tracks, Strength in Numbers still suffers from unexciting rhythms and a lack of wholehearted songwriting.
A little bit of color emerges from some occasional sax and trombone bits, but the overall package is below the standards of what .38 Special is capable of.
Actually, it's with Strength in Numbers that the band began to diminish in all areas, and the albums that followed failed to demonstrate any solid songcraft beyond the group's respected singles.

Released in 1982, Special Forces contains 38 Special's best song in "Caught Up in You," a hook-filled, smoothly sung radio rock gem that gets its energy from the grace and power of its chorus.

It's here that the guitar work of Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi combine to give Donnie Van Zant's singing a slick ride, fluently shifting from soft-tempered to vocally blatant at the change of a chord.

Wisely, .38 Special kept the musical recipe similar to its last couple of releases, with the only striking difference coming from an even greater ability to design a memorable and punchy lead single.
